Professor Satchafunkilus & The Musterion Of Rock
Joe Satriani
Satriani's style of instrumental rock doesn't really need an introduction. The man is a giant, and everything he does is enormously good. In the case of Satchafunkilus, most of it still is enormously good, but there's a chunk that the album could have done without. Take for example, the chorus driven I Just Wanna Rock. We can't deny that it will be a great live track at concerts, but other than that, on an album, it feels like a bit of a cop-out to the commercial genre.
Luckily, there are the standard Satriani numbers such as Overdriver, a song that will appeal to your gut instinct, even though, technically, it hard to put your finger on a why; Come On Baby, which is Joe's version of a love song; and Asik Vaysel, the sort of song we were hoping for more of from as Satrini. The odd one out is Professor Satchafunkilus. It doesn't follow the traditional Satch technique, it's sticks out almost like a sore thumb, and yet it's got that certain something that will enchant.
This might not be Satriani's best album ever, but then again, when a man sets such a high standard with prior releases, it's hard to follow-up with something better every time. You have to give Satriani credit for even trying to excel. And so what if he hasn't surpassed the likes of Surfing With The Alien, Professor Satchafunkilus is a brilliant effort.
