Safety of cyclists is necessary

Reader raises concern over people cycling to work from International City

Safety of cyclists is necessary

Dubai

In International City, Dubai, cyclists are seen riding on the main roads of the community without wearing safety gear, like helmets or reflective vests, which may cost them their lives. Their cycles also do not have reflectors on the pedals or handlebars.

Most of these cyclists live in International City and work in the fruit and vegetable market. In order to save on transportation expenses, they ride a cycle to work. They cross the roads or ride on the main arteries, which is extremely dangerous, especially at night. Sometimes, the street lights don’t work at night and cyclists suddenly appear in front of a car. In this situation, it becomes very hard for the motorists to slow down or stop.

I hope that the relevant authorities keep an eye on these cyclists, alert them on the necessary safety measures and take punitive measures if necessary, for repeated violations. This is necessary to ensure the safety of the cyclists, motorists and residents of the neighbourhood.

Simultaneously, authorities should put up sign boards in the community to warn cyclists about potential threats while they cycle on the roads, as well as to promote cycle safety. If possible, authorities should make a separate track for cyclists to ride on.

My appeal to these workers’ employers is to support them by providing company transportation so that their workers may not need to cycle at night or in the middle of a road, and can thus avoid any accident. Together, we can contribute to solving this issue. Safety is in our hands.
