With a string of box office hits and critically acclaimed movies — from One More Chance (2007) to The Mistress (2012) — Bea Alonzo has become one of the biggest celebrities in tinseltown, and is being hyped as the ‘Movie Queen of the New Generation’. Hear her thoughts about her career and love life, in this chat with tabloid!.

In the publicity campaign for ‘Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon’, your new show on ABS CBN, you’re being introduced as the ‘Movie Queen of the New Generation’. What do you think of your new tag?

It’s very flattering, although I am not a big fan of labels. I just do my best and I leave it to people to view and value my work.

But your body of work speaks for itself — great commercial success, and rave reviews from critics. Your thoughts?

I am very lucky to have been given the chance to work on some really great projects. It’s an honour to be working with very creative screenwriters, outstanding directors and equally talented co-actors. I’ve learned a lot from those experiences, and they have helped me grow as an artist. I’m just really glad I was in those projects, and the public appreciated them.

Do you have a favourite among all the movies or TV shows that you have done?

Each one is special and unique. As an artist, I approach my projects differently so I can give the public something new all the time. So each one has a special place in my heart.

What do you consider to be your hardest role?

Every character that I played was hard, very emotionally draining for the dramas, and also exhausting for the comedies. I believe it when artists say it’s harder to play comic roles. It’s more difficult to make people laugh than to make them cry. So I guess, the ones from my rom-com movies, or as Betty La Fea in the I Love Betty La Fea show. It was fun on the set, but it was a challenging role.

The question in most people’s minds now is when are you getting married to Zanjoe (Marudo, Alonzo’s actor boyfriend)?

I still have so many things on my to-do list before marriage [laughs]. I want to travel and spend some time in Europe, just soaking in the culture, tasting traditional dishes. There are some things that you enjoy when you’re single, and there are those things you enjoy as a couple. With Zanjoe, I believe our relationship is stable and we are very happy. We’d like to keep it that way, without the added pressure of marriage. We’ll get there I guess when we are ready.
