Say ‘Mr Chandramouli’ and it rings a bell. Mani Ratnam’s ‘Mouna Ragam’ flashes through the mind with the image of actor Karthik teasing Revathy in a coffee shop. Karthik’s Manohar — a high spirited young man can never be forgotten.

Director Thiru brings Karthik back in an eponymous role in upcoming film, Mr. Chandramouli. Interestingly, his son Gautham Karthik plays his reel son in this action drama.

Mr. Chandramouli is a jolly guy with a love for anything vintage, like his old fiat car for one, explains Thiru, whose story explores a father-son bond.

Gautham plays Raghav, a professional boxer. For the role, he trained in Thailand for two weeks.

Thiru, though excited to work with Karthik, was initially a little nervous but he soon got comfortable with the Mouna Ragam star.

“There are emotional scenes between the father and son and Karthik sir was happy about the opportunity to act with his son — something he missed out with his father [veteran Tamil actor Muthuraman].”

Regina Cassandra is paired opposite Gautham. She plays Madhu, who is running a start-up.

“Madhu is the practical one who supports her lover when he goes through an emotional crisis,” said Cassandra.

Varalakshmi Sarath Kumar’s role is the central point that takes the story ahead, added Thiru who last directed Naan Sigappu Manithan.

The supporting cast includes directors Mahendran, Agathiyan, Viji Chandrasekhar, Mime Gopi and Jagan. Richard M Nathan is the cinematographer. Music is scored by Sam CS.

Mr. Chandramouli releases in the UAE on July 5.
