Black was the colour of the evening at the audio launch of Rajnikanth’s upcoming film Kaala, held in Chennai recently. From Rajnikanth to the stage performers, everyone wore black.

Directed by Pa Ranjith, this gangster story is based in Dharavi, a well-known slum in Mumbai.

Yet, 80 per cent of the film was shot on sets, revealed art director, Ramalingam — “the highlight being a 90 feet [27 metre] high school building.”

Composer Santosh Narayanan performed the song Nikkal Nikkal accompanied by a team of more than 50 musicians including rappers from Dharavi. The Kaala album consists of nine songs.

Kaala is not a political story, but has politics, Ramalingam said.

Baasha’s Antony and Padayappa’s Neelambari are the two memorable villains of my career. Kaala’s Hari [played by Nana Patekar] is the third interesting villain,” he added.
