Her outfits always told the story. From the early days of Full House, to the stylish shorts and shirts that she wore as the quirky nurse in Descendants of the Sun, to the sedate long skirts, scarves in Encounter, and to finally the dresses of a vengeful woman in The Glory, South Korean star Song Hye-kyo consistently allowed her wardrobe to reflect her character’s evolution.

And that’s just on-screen. Off-screen, her fashion choices are a testament to her enduring stardom. Now, as the newly appointed ambassador for the luxury beauty brand Guerlain in January 2025, her journey in the fashion and beauty world deserve a revisit.

A muse for the biggest fashion brands

Song Hye-kyo has not only become a style icon, but also built a remarkable career as a model, serving as the muse for some of the most renowned fashion designers and photographers, including the late Karl Lagerfeld, former creative director of Chanel.

For over two decades, she has been one of the most sought-after Korean actresses for brand endorsements, with iconic labels even making appearances in her show Now We Are Breaking Up. She became Fendi’s ambassador in 2021, Chaumet’s in 2018, and starred in Bottega Veneta’s fashion film La Donna Che Amiamo (The Woman We Love) for their spring/summer 2020 collection. Not only is she a trailblazer in Korean fashion, but she has also played a pivotal role in elevating Korean beauty brands to the global stage. In 2008, she succeeded veteran actress Jun Ji-hyun as the face of Laneige, marking a major shift in the brand's image. Song held this role for nearly a decade, leaving an indelible mark on its identity.

In 2018, she bid farewell to Laneige with a heartfelt Instagram post: “I am so grateful for the amazing 10 years with Laneige, [a relationship built over trust and love]! And now I am excited to start this new journey with Sulwhasoo.” Alongside her work with fashion houses, she has also endorsed Etude House and Michaa, among others

The Red Carpet reign

Song Hye-kyo exudes a powerful, understated elegance that shines through in every red carpet appearance. At the 2023 Met Gala, she captivated with a dreamy, sweet look in a light-colored lace gown. Another standout moment was at the 2014 Beijing International Film Festival, where she stunned in a black off-shoulder gown that was both classy and sophisticated. Black gowns are undoubtedly her signature power move—she wore another timeless black piece at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards in 2016. Yet, she also knows when to embrace softness and minimalism, as seen when she donned an ethereal, pastel gown with flowing layers at the 2018 Baeksang Arts Awards.

Magazine covers

There’s a refreshing sense of calm around Song Hye-kyo—it’s what draws her to magazine covers. From long, sequined black gowns that exude modern glamour, to soft, pastel tulle dresses that capture her romantic side, and avant-garde silhouettes that play with textures and movement, she embraces experimental fashion. These editorial moments have cemented her reputation as a muse for both designers and photographers, solidifying her legacy as one of the most versatile and influential figures in the fashion world.

Just the casual elegance: Street style

While her red carpet looks always create a buzz, Hye-kyo’s off-duty style keeps her fans talking, too. Known for her love of neutral tones and clean lines, she often opts for tailored blazers, oversized coats, and chic ankle boots. Her street style carefully balances comfort and sophistication. One of her most memorable casual looks featured a camel trench coat layered over a crisp white blouse and black trousers. The ensemble was elevated with a structured leather handbag and sleek sunglasses, proving that simplicity can be incredibly chic.
