Charlize Theron is cautious about Netflix's decision on The Old Guard 3
With The Old Guard 2 now streaming on Netflix, director Victoria Mahoney opened up about her time with the franchise, and why she won’t be returning for a third installment, should it move forward.
In a new interview with The Direct, Mahoney addressed speculation about her involvement in a potential The Old Guard 3. The filmmaker was candid about her current commitments and the toll the sequel's production took on her schedule.
I’m not in the room. I’m not in that discussion of whether there will be another or not,” she said. The director, who stepped in for Gina Prince-Bythewood for the second film, explained that the extended timeline of The Old Guard 2 limited her ability to take on other projects. “The duration of this film took me from other projects I have, so I am legally obliged to some other projects. So, I will be for the next six, seven years, on some other jobs.”
Despite stepping away, Mahoney expressed her excitement for what lies ahead for the franchise. “Someone else will take that mantle in a wonderful, exciting way, and I don’t know what they’re gonna do, but I know it’ll be great, and it’ll be fun, and it will be with great regard and care for the audience, and I will be eagerly awaiting it.”
The Old Guard 2 premiered on July 2, 2025, with Charlize Theron returning as immortal warrior Andy. The sequel features a stacked cast including Uma Thurman, Henry Golding, Kiki Layne, Marwan Kenzari, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. This time, the team faces off against a formidable new villain, Discord, played by Thurman.
While Mahoney may be stepping aside, it’s clear she’s leaving the franchise in hopeful hands—and fans can look forward to what’s next.
However, Theron isn’t counting on a third film just yet.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Theron was asked how confident she was that Netflix would greenlight The Old Guard 3. Her response was honest: “Oh, never confident, no. One thing I’ve learned in this business is that there are no guarantees, and it’s really gracious of [Netflix] to not have pushed us into another direction.”
The Oscar-winning actress, who reprises her role as immortal warrior Andy, added that the sequel was designed to stand on its own, much like the original. “This was always where we wanted to land the film, and it’s also very reminiscent of the first one. We never ended the first one thinking we were going to do a second, but that was just how it happened to be. So we treated this one exactly the same, but I’m being completely honest when I say that we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”
