Weekend watchlist: 10 TV shows and movies to check out

‘Cinderella’ (Amazon Prime Video): It may be getting some flak for its storyline — which deviates from the original and is somehow worse — but this movie is a charmer thanks to its music. It also stars some stage favourites such as Camila Cabello, James Corden and Idina Menzel. Forget the plotline, but do stay for the show.

‘The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf’ (Netflix): This animation, which delves into the making of a witcher — hunter of all things evil and monstrous — is pure entertainment. It’s got blood and gore, sure, but it’s also got heart. The story follows Vesemir’s journey from poverty to rich witcher to hero.

‘Lucifer’ (Netflix): Season 6 is out on Friday, just in time for a binge watch. The last season of the hilarious crime fighting-alongside-the-devil promises to be just as engaging as its predecessor. It begins where the last one ended — with Lucifer taking over as the king of the heavens.

‘Thalaivii’ (UAE cinemas in Hindi and Tamil languages): Kangana Ranaut’s new biopic is based on one of India’s most enigmatic and flamboyant political figures — J Jayalalithaa. The six-time Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is a riveting subject and it would be interesting to see how Ranaut breathes life into her. You might dislike Ranaut’s off-screen antics on social media, but there’s no denying that she’s a powerhouse performer. We hear Aravind Swami as superstar-turned-politician is also in top form here.

‘Tuck Jagadish’ (Amazon Prime Video): Starring Telugu superstar Nani, this Telugu feature is a good vs evil tale — an apt theme around the Indian festival of Ganesh Chathurthi. Nani plays the titular role who is determined to cleanse his village of a local thug. Give this a shot to see why Nani remains one of Telugu’s biggest draws in cinema.

‘The OC’: I was feeling a little nostalgic, so I started watching ‘The OC’ again. The OC is about a troubled teen called Ryan becomes embroiled in the lives of a close-knit group of people in the wealthy, upper-class neighbourhood of Newport Beach, Orange County, California.

‘Money Heist’ (Netflix): Eight thieves take hostages and lock themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain as a criminal mastermind manipulates the police to carry out his plan. The new season was just released, so now is the perfect time to watch this exhilarating Spanish show.

‘Malignant’ (UAE cinemas): This new flick from horror director James Wan bound to thrill. In it, character Madison is tormented by horrible visions of grisly murders. Her visions get worse and then she realises that they are actually really happening to people — so she decided it’s her duty to save them.

‘Fatale’ (UAE cinemas): Hollywood actors Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy star in this thriller about a married man who has a one-night stand. Soon after, his life starts to unravel after the woman he has the fling with turns out to be a police detective who gets him tangled up in her latest investigation. Her web gets more and more intricate and this successful man risks losing his wife, family and more.

‘On the Verge’: This new Netflix series created by actress Julie Delpy is sure to be relatable for women of our times. In it, four women — a chef, a single mom, an heiress and a job seeker — delve into love and work, with a side of midlife crises, in pre-pandemic Los Angeles.
