Veteran actor Achyut Potdar, remembered fondly by audiences for his unforgettable turn as a professor in Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots, has passed away at the age of 91.
Potdar, who made a late entry into films at 44, went on to become one of the most recognisable supporting actors in Hindi and Marathi cinema. Over his career, he appeared in more than 125 films and 100 television serials.
He breathed his last on Monday in Thane. While the exact cause of his death has not been disclosed, reports suggest he had been hospitalised recently due to age-related health complications. His funeral will be held on August 19 in Thane.
Confirming the news, Star Pravah paid tribute to him on Instagram: “A heartfelt tribute to senior actor Achyut Potdar… His smile, simplicity and honesty in every role will always be remembered.”
Best known for his role alongside Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan in 3 Idiots, Potdar’s line 'Kehna Kya Chahte Ho' became a cult favourite, inspiring countless memes online.
Before entering films, Potdar led an eclectic life, serving in the Indian Armed Forces, working with the Indian Oil Company, and teaching as a professor in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
His filmography spans across eras, with notable performances in Aakrosh, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyoon Aata Hai, Ardh Satya, Tezaab, Parinda, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Dilwale, Yeh Dillagi, Rangeela, Mrityudand, Ishq, Vaastav, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Dabangg 2, and Ventilator.
