Dubai: John Abraham’s latest political thriller, The Diplomat, is on track to surpass the Rs150 million ($18 million) milestone at the box office.
According to Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 46.5 million ($5.6 million) on its third day. On its opening Sunday, the film recorded a 19.61% Hindi occupancy. So far, The Diplomat has amassed a total of Rs 133 million ($16 million) in the domestic market. It did not release in the UAE.
Directed by Shivam Nair, The Diplomat delves into India–Pakistan relations, blending geopolitical tension with the personal struggles of diplomats.
John Abraham stars as J.P. Singh, India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan, while Sadia Khateeb portrays Uzma Ahmed, a woman seeking repatriation to India. The supporting cast features Kumud Mishra, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy, and Ashwath Bhatt in crucial roles.
Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh highlighted the film’s box office trajectory on social media, noting its 16.13% growth on Saturday. "The Diplomat showed an upward trend on Saturday, though a stronger performance would have placed it in a more comfortable position," he observed.
Ahead of its release, John Abraham expressed his enthusiasm for the script.
"I love geopolitics, and I was instantly drawn to this story. Credit to Ritesh Shah (writer) – I fell in love with what I read. For me, it's always about the narrative; whether a man or a woman leads it doesn’t matter. If the story is compelling, everything else falls into place," he told PTI.
With The Diplomat gaining traction, its performance in the coming weekdays will determine its long-term success at the box office.
