Guess who is making a Tamil film?

None other than Ram Gopal Varma, the director known for his gangster hits in Telegu and Hindi.

Titled ‘Naanthanda,’ and featuring Sarvanand (of Tamil film ‘Engeyum Eppodhum,’ fame) opposite newcomer Anaika, and yes, this is another crime story set in Tamil Nadu.

During the launch of the trailer of the film in Chennai, RGV, as he is known, said, “This is the first time I am making a full-fledged film in Tamil. The story is about a criminal who does a study on crime organizations across the world to understood their methods. The police have never encountered a criminal as smart as him before.”

Woven into the script is a love story, added RGV.

“The story is a mix of my earlier films, ‘Rangeela’ and ‘Satya,’.”

Produced by Satis Film Corporation, ‘Naanthaanda,’ has music by Sanjeev, Darshan and Nitin Raikwar. Vikash Saraf is the cinematographer.

‘Puthran’ director appeals for funds

Director Jayabharathy, known as the father of Tamil Nadu’s parallel cinema, has yet to find a taker for his new film, ‘Puthran.’ The movie has been lying in the cans for the past two years for want of funds. In an appeal to the media and film lovers, the director, known for his meaningful stories said, “ I plan to release ‘Puthran’ if you can contribute. I need Rs3 million (Dh201,573) and I have been asking friends to support the cause with Rs20,000 each.”

“Your amount will be paid from the first week’s collection from theatres,” assured Jayabharathy, whose maiden venture, ‘Kudisai,’ made in 1979, is being preserved by the National Film Archives of India as a masterpiece. His ‘Nanba Nanba’ won national acclaim for actor Vaagai Chandrashekar.

‘Puthran’ is a poignant tale of a couple whose only child goes missing. Featuring Y. Gee Mahendra, Sangeetha and Master Varun in pivotal roles, ‘Puthran’ is written, directed and produced by Jayabharathy. Action king Arjun returns to direction

South Indian actor Arjun — who delivered spectacular performances recently with ‘Kadal,’ ‘Vanayudham’ and ‘Moondru Per Moondru Kadhal,’ — says he is going back to what he loves the most — direction.

Arjun will be directing ‘Jai Hind 2’, a story written by him, which he will be producing on behalf of Sriram Films International. He will also be playing the lead role. Surveen Chawla is paired opposite him. Budgeted at a whopping Rs200 million, this trilingual will be made in Tamil, Telegu and Kannada. Dialogues have been penned by Gopi Krishna. Cinematography is by Venu.

Arjun said, “I dedicate this film to the former President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and to the entire media. All my earlier movies including ‘Gentleman,’ and ‘Mudhalvan’ dwelt on the evils of society and the need to fight social maladies. This film talks about the present education system and its ills.

But ‘Jai Hind 2’ is not a sequel to Jai Hind,’ clarified Arjun, referring to another film he directed earlier, in which he played a police officer.
