“The hard work of five years paid,” said an elated Sankalp Reddy — Telugu director of Indian National Award-winning film ‘Ghazi.’

This period drama is centred around the mysterious disappearance of Pakistan’s submarine PNS Ghazi during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Reddy initially planned to make Ghazi, based on his own book, Blue Fish, with stage actors and release it on YouTube.

But destiny intervened in the form of Telugu actor Rana Daggubatti, who piqued by curiosity met Reddy after noticing a submarine parked outside Reddy’s house in Hyderabad.

Ghazi’s fate changed once Daggubatti came on board bringing with him the late Om Puri, Atul Kulkarni, Kay Kay Menon and Taapsee Pannu.

Clearly the national recognition goes beyond Reddy’s dreams.

From underwater shooting for Ghazi, he now embarks on his second film, a story about an astronaut. Varun Tej, Aditi Rao Hydari and Lavanya Tripathi are playing the leads.

“We are planning to bring in European technicians to help us with the filming of zero gravity scenes,” said Reddy who will begin shooting in May.
