Prithviraj’s mega film ‘Karnan’: The first look

The first look of the costliest Malayalam film Karnan, starring Prithviraj and produced by Dubai-based businessman Venu Kunnappilly, was unveiled in a grand manner at the Burj Al Arab on Friday night.

A classical dance performance by actress Lakshmi Gopalaswamy and a touching introduction by the lead actor about the fascinating mythological character, Karnan, set the ball rolling. Karnan, which will be made on an estimated budget of Rs50 crores (Rs500 millionDh27.087 million), re-unites Prithviraj with the Ennum Ninte Moideen director R.S. Vimal.

“Who does not love Karnan? He’s the perennial underdog … What’s really interesting about him is that he’s someone who has been fighting inner devils since birth. He’s disowned by his own mother, termed a bastard, termed somebody who’s not deserving to be a king and befriended by the enemy of his own brother … There’s a constant conflict,” said Prithviraj in an interview with tabloid! earlier in the day. He added that the character Karnan made for perfect cinematic fodder.

Prithviraj, who made a crossover to Bollywood with films such as Aurangzeb and Aiyaa, is one of Kerala’s most bankable stars. His releases in 2015, including the romantic tragedy Ennu Ninte Moideen and Anarkali, were super hits. But the actor maintains: “The most expensive tag is not what we want to play with … I understand it makes for a great headline. It’s not about spending money, but all depends on the kind of film we make.”

Karnan’s first look, which saw Prithviraj sporting long hair and moustache in a horse-drawn chariot. also has cameraman Senthil Kumar, of Bahubali fame, as a part of its team.
