After interrogation, officials believe the actor consumed cannabis, but did not deal in it
Dubai: Malayalam actors Shine Tom Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi were questioned for over 10 hours on Monday by the Excise Department in connection with the recent seizure of hybrid ganja from a resort in Omanapuzha, Alappuzha, according to reports. Also summoned was Sowmya, a young model. After intensive interrogation, officials clarified that the three were not involved in any drug dealings linked to the case.
The seizure of hybrid ganja — a highly potent form of cannabis — from the resort had triggered a high-profile investigation, drawing attention to possible celebrity connections.
While the actors and the model reportedly denied any association with the accused individuals involved in the case, the questioning extended late into the evening to verify facts and cross-check statements.
During the interrogation, actor Shine Tom Chacko admitted to personal drug use, though no evidence of his involvement in drug trafficking emerged.
Following his admission, Shine was shifted to a de-addiction centre in Thodupuzha with the consent of his family and the authorities. Officials confirmed that he would remain under the surveillance of the Excise Department while undergoing treatment.
Excise officials indicated that the investigation remains active and that Shine, Sreenath Bhasi, and Sowmya could be summoned again for further questioning if necessary.
“There is no evidence so far linking them to drug peddling or dealings. However, statements and leads are still being verified,” said an official on condition of anonymity.
This development marks another chapter in Shine Tom Chacko’s controversial career. The actor, known for his intense performances in Malayalam cinema, has previously faced scrutiny for brushes with the law. However, Monday’s questioning and subsequent move to a de-addiction facility point more toward personal rehabilitation than criminal prosecution at this stage.
The case also underscores a growing concern within the Malayalam film industry about substance use among artists. With public figures being questioned and subjected to treatment, authorities are sending a strong signal about accountability and support for rehabilitation rather than just punitive action.
As of now, Shine Tom Chacko’s ongoing projects and film commitments remain in uncertainty, pending his recovery. Excise officials emphasized that their focus would remain on dismantling drug networks rather than targeting individuals battling addiction.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
