If Jason Derulo’s Caribbean connection is that he was born in Haiti, then Sean Kingston’s is that he grew up in Jamaica. The Beautiful Girls singer was born in Miami but spent his formative years in the Caribbean, making him apt to perform at Thursday night’s Caribbean Carnival at Burj Park in Downtown Dubai. tabloid! caught up with the singer to chat island music, his new album and good times in Dubai.
Welcome back to Dubai. You’ve performed in the UAE several times. Any fun memories?
I love performing in Dubai, the fans are always amazing. I have gone out on boats, ridden ATVs in the sand and even rode a camel the last time I was here.
What have you got in store for us at your performance in Novemeber?
A lot of energy and a great show!! I will also be performing a song or two from my upcoming album, Back 2 Life.
You’ll be performing at a Caribbean-themed carnival. Who are your favourite Caribbean artists and why? Tell us about some tracks we should be listening to?
Movado and Vybz Kartel are a couple of my favourites and of course I listen to all old Bob Marley.
What are your fondest memories of growing up in Jamaica? How would you describe Caribbean culture?
My family, the food and the simplicity of life. The islands are so much more laid back, everyone moves at a slower pace and enjoys life.
You’ve got a new album coming soon. Tell us about who’s on the album, how you put it all together and what we can expect?
The new album is called Back 2 Life. It has features from Busta Rhymes, Wiz Kalifa, Nicki Minaj, and TI. It is classic Sean Kingston with a more mature twist. I am 22 years old now, so I am talking more about my growth and experiences.
How was it working with Justin Bieber? Do you care about criticism from the rap world about that collaboration?
Justin is one of my closest friends and I loved working with him. He is very talented.
You partied with Chris Brown at a cool pool party recently. Tell us about life as Sean Kingston – is it lots of fun?
I work hard, so when I get to play I enjoy it to the fullest. Chris and I are good friends and we both love in LA. We had a pool party to celebrate Chris’ VMA nominations.
Rob Kardashian was also at the party. Who is your favourite Kardashian?
I like them all. I mean, the girls are all beautiful and successful, what’s not to love about that! And Rob and I have gotten to be friends and hang out when we are both in LA.
You had a serious accident last year. How are you feeling now? Has it changed anything in your life?
I am feeling extremely blessed. I have recovered well, by the grace of God, and am looking forward to what God has in store for me now. It has definitely changed my perspective on life. I live each day to the fullest and never take anything for granted. I value my friends and family and all of life’s experiences.
