Unlike his previous period films, this one is a contemporary tale based on the Gujarati novel Kimball Ravenswood. And it marks Ashutosh’s romantic comedy debut.

The plot

US-based Yogesh Patel finds himself in a desperate situation
– he has to find his dream girl within ten days to save his family from an unwanted mishap. To overcome this, he decides to meet one girl from each star sign as he feels it’s the best way to find a suitable wife. Accordingly, he starts hunting for his bride by fixing two meetings per day, giving him six days to meet 12 prospective brides, three days to make the final decision and one day to get married. Or so he thinks!

Chopra’s the girl

According to the novel, the 12 characters are supposed to be played by different women, but Gowariker opted to cast only Priyanka Chopra as he felt different actresses would’ve complicated the story line. Sunita Gowariker, Ashutosh’s wife and co-producer of What’s Your Raashee?, is all praise for Chopra. “Priyanka plays 12 characters, all aged between 18 and 25. She had to work hard to ensure that every character stood out, without appearing to look like a caricature.”

Baweja’s best bet

Harman Baweja is almost written off as a Hrithik Roshan look-alike and the media has been rather harsh on him despite his sincere efforts in the ill-fated Love Story 2050 and Victory. Now Baweja gets his third chance to cast away all the bad reviews. Chopra, who acted with Baweja in Love Story 2050, seems to be impressed with his performance. “I think Harman has definitely evolved as an actor and has come up with a credible performance in What’s Your Raashee?.”

A 13-song musical

What’s Your Raashee? has 13 songs, with one track dedicated to each star sign and the title track featuring all 12 characters. Unlike his previous films, Gowariker has handed the musical work to Sohail Sen. “It’s amazing how Sohail has integrated each track with a range of distinctive sounds. Each song is true to each character,” she says.
The only hitch about having so many characters and songs is the extended length of the film. “The audience won’t mind sitting for longer, as long as the content is strong,” says Ashutosh. We wonder if What’s Your Raashee? will manage to keep us glued!
