One was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and the other has a mouth full of gold.

But that is probably all that Prince Harry and drum and bass DJ Goldie have in common.

Despite this, the pair are planning to stage a TV talent show together after getting on "like a house on fire" when they met at a music concert.

A group of 12 would-be musicians will take part in Goldie's Band: By Royal Appointment, ending with a finale concert at Buckingham Palace in front of Harry, 25, and 44-year-old Goldie.

The unlikely duo met at the Wireless Festival in Hyde Park last year after Harry apparently quoted lyrics to the song Bonkers by the rapper Dizzee Rascal.

The gold-toothed DJ could not be a less conventional companion for the Prince with four children by different mothers, brushes with the police and a history of cocaine addiction.

He is, however, recruiting classical musicians, hip hop artists and heavy metal fans aged 17 to 24, who will be mentored by industry experts including former Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews, Robbie Williams' composer Guy Chambers and jazz artist Soweto Kinch.

After a three-day residential workshop filmed for a BBC2 show, the new band will perform at Buckingham Palace in October.

"Harry is a fan of reality TV, but what is particularly good about this one is that it's about mentoring and encouragement nobody gets voted off or laughed at, so it's not nasty at all. Harry believes music can be a way for young people who haven't had the best of starts in life to get a new chance," a royal aide said.

Goldie, who was born Clifford Price, said: "This is one of the most inspiring projects I've ever been involved with. It's all about unearthing musical talent that's under the radar in Britain finding young people who've faced huge challenges and have never had the opportunities that they deserve."
