Sheryl Cruz was still at the height of her career when she left for the US and got married. She came back with a bang a few years back, still with a strong following that made her comeback a success. Now she’s going back to her roots and recording a new album.

Q: Nice to hear that you are singing again.

a: Thank you. I feel the same way. I’m actually very excited about this new album entitled Sa Puso Ay Ikaw Pa Rin (In My Heart, You’re Still the One). It has been ages since I last recorded a song, so this has really been a most pleasant experience. The lead single is called Mananatili (Will Remain), which we also released recently under Universal Records.

Q: Tell us more about it.

a: I composed several songs in the album including the lead single; the other is entitled The Last to Know. Some songs I collaborated with some of our well-known composers, such as Ariel Mayormita with whom I worked on the song Habang-buhay (Forever) and Mon del Rosario for Somewhere in My Past.

I also translated some of the songs to Japanese, because it will also be released in Japan.

Q: Why Japan?

a: I have a soft spot for Japanese music; and obviously I know the language. It’s actually a big market, and we’re confident we will do well there.

Besides that I really love Japanese culture, the cuisine and of course Japanese anime and manga.

Music transcends all boundaries. I consider music a universal language of the soul that can be shared with others even if there are language barriers. Whether the album does well or not, I am happy I was able to sing again.

This is also my way of thanking God for all the blessings that have been given to me. By using the talent He has blessed me with, I am honouring what He has done for me.

Q: Besides singing, are you still into acting?

Oh, yes, very much. I just finished Trenderas for TV5, and I will be back on TV via the new GMA series, Strawberry Lane, which will star Barbie Forteza. I also plan to produce another album, this time with Tina Paner and Manilyn Reynes, two of my best friends in the business. We just haven’t found the time yet, but hopefully it will happen soon.

Q: There were rumours that your reunion project with Tina and Manilyn will no longer push through, allegedly because of money issues?

A: There is no truth to that. We are all keen on doing either a reunion concert or album or both. We used to be known in showbusiness as The Triplets when we were younger; and we still have that bond. We can still entertain people, and once our schedules are sorted out, our reunion project will push through.
