Philippines: 10 films for Christmas 2023

MANILA FILM FEST SEASON: The 49th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) presents 10 films for Christmas. Some big directors and brilliant stars have come together to entertain the nation this holiday season. Films participating in the festival will be screened starting December 25, 2023. The filmfest runs until January 7, 2024.

FAMILY OF TWO (A MOTHER AND SON'S STORY): In this family drama, Sharon Cuneta takes on the role of Maricar, alongside Alden Richards as Mateo. The narrative centers on Maricar, a devoted single mother, and her profound connection with her son, Mateo. Directed by Nuel C. Naval, the film delves into the dynamics of this family, exploring the challenges and emotions that define their lives.

FIREFLY: This coming-of-age drama unfolds as a young boy embarks on a quest to find the mythical island of fireflies from his mother's enchanting bedtime stories. Armed with clues she left in an old notebook, the story explores the journey of discovery. Starring Alessandra de Rossi, Euwenn Mikaell, and Dingdong Dantes, and directed by Zig Dulay, the film captures the essence of adventure and self-discovery.

GOMBURZA: In this historical drama, the narrative unfolds around the ascent of the secularisation movement spearheaded by Priest Pedro Peláez. It also delves into the challenges faced by the trio of priests—Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, collectively known as GomBurZa—culminating in their struggles and execution. The cast includes Cedrick Juan, Dante Rivero, Enchong Dee, and Piolo Pascual. Directed by Pepe Diokno, the film captures the significant events and characters shaping this poignant chapter in history.

KAMPON: Directed by King Palisoc, this horror thriller centers on Clark and Eileen, a married couple of eight years who encounter a mysterious girl knocking on their door. The girl, later identified as Jade, asserts to be Clark's child. Starring Beauty Gonzales, Derek Ramsay, and Erin Espiritu, the film explores the unsettling events that follow this unexpected revelation, adding an eerie twist to the couple's childless existence. Palisoc is known for Tandem (2015), Babe, I Love You (2010) and Bang Bang Alley (2014).

MALLARI: Directed by Roderick "Derick" Cabrido, this time-travel horror-thriller is a blend of fiction and real-life events inspired by the story of Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, a priest from the 1800s who gained notoriety as the first recorded Filipino serial killer, responsible for 57 deaths. The film features Piolo Pascual in a leading role. Cabrido, known for his work as a Filipino documentary producer and filmmaker, earned the Bronze World Medal at the 2009 New York Television Festival for his documentary "Pinays for Export."

PENDUKO: In this fantasy-action-adventure film, the narrative centers on a 20-year-old individual raised in the US, who embarks on a journey to the Philippines after his father's death in search of his mother. However, he unravels a tale of curses and malevolent forces wreaking havoc on the town. The film stars Matteo Guidicelli and is directed by Jason Paul Laxamana, known for his prowess in the romance genre with notable films like "100 Tula Para Kay Stella," "Just A Stranger," and "Between Maybes."

REWIND: Directed by Mae Cruz-Alviar, this romance-drama unfolds as a troubled man is presented with an opportunity to reset his life under one condition: sacrificing his life in place of his wife's. In the process, he comes to realize that genuine happiness is found in the aspects he has overlooked, such as love. The film features the real-life husband-and-wife duo Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, adding a poignant touch to the exploration of life, love, and second chances. Alviar is renowned for her work in films such as "Crazy Beautiful You" and "Can't Help Falling in Love."

WHEN I MET YOU IN TOKYO: Directed by Conrado Peru and Rommel Penesa, this romantic-comedy and drama film introduces Azon, a spirited and vivacious woman renowned for her generous heart. She crosses paths with Joey, a divorced man still carrying the wounds of his ex-wife's betrayal. The film stars Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon, blending elements of romantic comedy and drama to weave a compelling narrative of love and healing.

BROKEN HEARTS TRIP: Directed by Lem Lorca, this comedy-drama explores the theme of friendship within the context of a reality show. The storyline revolves around five individuals grappling with broken hearts, all striving to overcome their past love lives. The film features Christian Bables, Iyah Mina, and Jaclyn Jose, capturing the nuances of humor and drama as the characters navigate the challenges of moving on and finding new paths in love and life.

"Becky and Badette," directed by Jun Robles Lana, tells the story of two best friends from high school who unexpectedly gain online fame by inventing stories about one of their classmates. Starring Eugene Domingo and Pokwang, the film is a buddy comedy that explores the humorous consequences of their newfound viral status.
