Ahead of their Strictly Acoustic concert in Dubai, Filipino acoustic band Make Your Momma Proud, more popularly known as MYMP, tell tabloid! they have prepared a more relaxed and intimate show this time.
The acoustic duo of Chin Alcantara and vocalist Jana Laraza will perform at Club of Asia at Wafi Pyramids on October 14.
“Although we’ve had several shows in Dubai, the majority of those who watch us are first-timers,” says Alcantara in an email interview. “So it’s a must that we play many of our songs that they come to love. And we’ll be doing songs from our new album Electrified as well.”
Laraza adds: “It’ll be a stripped-down show because we will be playing an acoustic set this time.”
The band was founded in late 1996 by Alcantara along with his elder brother, Julius, who gave the band its name to serve as a tribute to their late mother. The band’s 2003 debut album, Soulful Acoustic, has been certified platinum and the band’s popularity continued to soar since with many of the band’s original music becoming acoustic hits. Excerpts from the interview:
What’s in store for you for the rest of 2016?
Alcantara: We’re busy with our gigs, shows and concerts to promote our latest album. If time permits, we will release an album this year. If not, probably early next year.
Laraza: Maybe a new album. I’m excited for our Christmas album, but I’m not sure if it will be released this year.
You’ve been in the industry for two decades now, what’s next for MYMP? What things do you still want to pursue?
Alcantara: The goal is to keep making music whether it’s original or covers until we literally can’t do it anymore. Personally I would like to concentrate on being a record producer and discover and hone upcoming talents.
Laraza: Career-wise I still want to make more music/songs and tour the world. Personally, I want to meet more artists and musicians, especially those who have been my inspiration.
How has been your journey so far? Especially for Chin, as an original member of the band.
Alcantara: I couldn’t ask for more! I mean, I surpassed all of my goals and dreams! My humble dream was to record and release an album, that’s it! I never imagined we could travel the world and share our music.
It’s a competitive world in the Philippine music industry. What keeps you in the business and what’s your edge over other bands?
Alcantara: Passion is what keeps us in the business. For me passion means doing this like I was just starting out. That’s a question I don’t know the answer to. Maybe you have an idea as a casual listener or audience.
Laraza: Maybe it’s our drive to be better in our craft. Having regular shows and gigs so people won’t forget that we are still active.
What’s your advice to aspiring singers or musicians?
Alcantara: This is not an easy job. If you want to make it, be prepared to make the sacrifices. Your time, your family, your friends, and even your love life. In the end it will all be worth it.
Laraza: Love what you’re doing. Always give your best and keep on learning.
