Dubai: Pilita Corrales, the legendary Filipino pop singer, actress, and television icon revered across generations as “Asia’s Queen of Songs,” has passed away at the age of 85. Her granddaughter, actress Janine Gutierrez, confirmed the news through a heartfelt post on Instagram on Saturday, April 12.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mami and mamita, Pilita Corrales,” Gutierrez wrote. “Pilita touched the lives of many, not only with her songs but also with her kindness and generosity. She will be remembered for her contributions to the entertainment industry, but most of all for her love of life and family.”

Born in Cebu City on August 22, 1939, Corrales carved out an illustrious career that spanned more than six decades. She was best known for her soaring vocal performances, timeless elegance, and her signature on-stage backbend—an iconic move that became synonymous with her name. She rose to prominence with classic hits such as Kapantay ay Langit, A Million Thanks to You, Ang Pag-ibig ay Mahiwaga, and Dahil Sa’yo, earning her a permanent place in the pantheon of Philippine music legends.

Corrales' influence extended beyond music. She was a beloved presence on Philippine television, co-hosting An Evening with Pilita and later mentoring young talents as a judge on shows like Philippine Idol. She also acted alongside screen legends Fernando Poe Jr. and Dolphy, further cementing her status as a cultural icon.

Corrales was married in 1963 to Spanish executive Gonzalo Blanco. The couple later separated, and Gonzalo passed away in 1981. She is survived by her two children—actress Jackie Lou Blanco and actor Ramon “Monching” Christopher Gutierrez—both respected figures in the entertainment industry. Her granddaughter, Janine Gutierrez, continues the family’s showbiz legacy.

Tributes poured in online following the announcement of her passing. Fans, colleagues, and fellow artists remembered Corrales for her immense talent, generosity, and warmth. “She was a wonderful person with so much light, love, and energy,” wrote actor Richard Yap. Actress Kristina Concepcion also shared, “Tita Pilita was so loving, kind, spunky, and just wonderful.”

Funeral and memorial arrangements have yet to be announced.

Corrales’ voice may have gone silent, but her songs—and the grace with which she lived and performed—will echo through generations. A true national treasure, Pilita Corrales leaves behind a legacy that is as timeless as the music she gave the world.
