While dozens of performers are still buzzing over their Grammy wins, UK singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran took to Instagram on Tuesday to celebrate another kind of prize.
Sheeran posted a photo of a signed Hofner guitar, a German brand that McCartney popularised through his frequent usage of the 500/1 violin-shaped model that became dubbed the ‘Beatles bass’. In block letters written with black marker on the front, it read ‘For Ed, because he is brilliant!’ followed by Macca’s renowned signature.
“Well this wasn’t the worst way to end a Monday,” Sheeran captioned the photo, linking it on his Twitter account.
Both Sheeran and McCartney were at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. Sheeran — who bagged the title of British Breakthrough Act and British Male Solo Artist at the 2012 Brit Awards and earned a nomination for Song of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards — first met McCartney when he played at the Queen’s Jubilee two years ago. He told the BBC that the highlight of his career was introducing McCartney to his father.
“My dad’s kind of been listening to the Beatles for years and I’d met Paul Mccartney earlier in the day, and then in the evening, my dad was standing next to me and Paul McCartney brought his grandson over to say hi to me. So I had the opportunity to be like, ‘Dad, meet Paul, Paul, meet dad!’”
Sheeran has finished working on his second album which he’s said has more of a ‘band sound’ than his stripped-down debut, +. The record is to release on February 17.
