South Korean stars Choi Woo-shik and Park Bo-young recently shed insights on their upcoming drama, Melo Movie. On February 12, the cast and director attended a press conference in Jongno, Seoul, to discuss the upcoming series. Present were lead actors Woo-shik, Bo-young, Lee Jun-young, Jeon So-nee, and director Oh Choong-hwan.

Melo Movie tells the story of four young people finding support in each other as they navigate the difficulties in life, along with their past traumas. The drama is penned by Lee Na-eun, known for Our Beloved Summer, and directed by Oh Choong Hwan, whose notable works include Castaway Diva, Big Mouth, Start-Up, and Hotel Del Luna.Choi Woo-shik takes on the role of Ko-gyeom, an aspiring actor-turned-film critic who falls in love with Kim Mu-bee (Park Bo Young) at first sight. Mu Bee, a film director, enters the industry due to a complex relationship with her cinephile father, who always prioritised work over their relationship.

Speaking about the role, Park Bo-young shared that she was drawn to the love story as she found it realistic. “Since Woo-shik was cast before me, I kept envisioning him as Gyeom while reading the script. It felt so natural that I knew I had to take the role.”

Addressing comparisons between Ko-gyeom and his previous role as Choi-woong in Our Beloved Summer, Choi Woo-hik clarified that both characters were distinct,  as Woong was an introvert who also kept things to himself, while Gyeom was more open and free.

Discussing the character’s romantic journey, he added that it was easier to portray, as his character falls in love at first sight, experiences an unexpected relationship and later faces an unforeseen reunion. “He won’t give up,” he says, adding that he particularly enjoyed the relentless determination in his character.

One of the reasons why fans are awaiting the drama, is to see the chemistry between the lead actors. Park Bo-young has previously worked with Woo-shik’s close friends Park Seo-joon and Park Hyung-sik. When asked how they reacted to his collaboration with her, Woo-shik shared, “They were all really excited. Not just my friends, but everyone kept telling me how amazing she is—how talented, kind, and wonderful. And I completely understand why. She was such a great support on set, even helping with my mental well-being.”

Bo-young has worked with Hyung-sik in the series, Strong Girl Bong-Soon, and Seo-joon in Concrete Utopia, added, “Each of them has their own strengths. Seo-joon is older, Hyung-sik is younger, and I admire both. But this was my first time acting alongside someone my age, and it felt incredibly comfortable and natural. Woo Shik makes me feel at ease—he’s like my ‘laugh button.’ Even before he says anything, it’s already funny. He’s so delightful that just watching him can boost your mood.”

Melo Movie releases on Netflix, on February 14.
