Young actors to watch out for this year

The girls

Emma Roberts: Julia Roberts' niece made her big- screen acting debut at just nine as Johnny Depp's daughter in Blow. As if that weren't enough of an invitation to stardom, Roberts recently starred in the Hollywood adaptation of the famous Nancy Drew novels, as well as alongside teen singer JoJo in the mermaid adventure Aquamarine. Apart from designing her own handbag for a hip US fashion label, she'll also be playing an out-of-control teenager who is shipped to an English boarding school in Wild Child, out this year.

Amy Adams: A Hollywood face which up until this year everybody could recognise but not many could name. Adams appeared in the comedy Talledega Nights alongside Will Ferrell and was Oscar-nominated for her role in Junebug. Achieving a Marry Poppins-like success in her latest the Disney animated/live film Enchanted which also stars Patrick Dempsey, this redhead is ready for some more! In the pipeline this year are her appearances in Charlie Wilson's War, Sunshine Cleaning and Doubt.

Natalie Press: This 27-year-old acclaimed English actress who caught the film world's attention when she starred in the award-winning 2004 film My Summer of Love. Known for her great roles in independent films, this enigmatic wonder has chosen to continue flexing her acting skills in a similar vein, starring as Emily in the arty film Brontë, as well as in the Rembrandt biopic, Nightwatching and alongside Cillian Murphy in Telepathy.

The boys

Shia Labeouf: After storming into the summer blockbuster hits with Transformers, this former child star has already hit leading man territory — and at just 21! This summer, he'll be back in the fourth epic Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford. With a role in the upcoming Eagle Eye, as well as continuing his role in the sequel to Transformers, Labeouf is Hollywood's new IT guy — a label we're not complaining about!

Andrew Garfield: Appearing opposite Tom Cruise, Robert Redford and Meryl Streep may have been an intimidating feat but this new indie boy on the block made quite the talked-about screen debut — impressive for a 24 year old. We'll be catching him in The Other Boleyn Girl and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, both of which will be out later 2008.

Joe Anderson: This British actor found his calling playing an American teenager drafted to war in Nam in 2007's psychedelic Across the Universe and then in the critically acclaimed film, Control. 2008's going to be more than just busy for this 25 year old as he films and releases no less than four films, including the blood and gore film The Ruins, Talking with Dog, High Life and Three Words and a Star.
