Green Day in the UAE - the words are ever so thrilling to this long-time music writer
Dubai: As a teenage college student struggling with homesickness and an existential crisis, Green Day’s epic record Dookie - the punk-rock band's third studio album and first commercial hit - struck a sympathetic chord with me upon its release back in February 1994.
At the time, I was a student overseas, and often missed life in Dubai, the vibrant city where I grew up in the 80s and 90s listening to 92 FM and watching music programmes on Channel 33.
Almost 19, stuck in a rut and lacking general direction in both my personal and professional life, I happened to chance upon a music cassette of Dookie in an obscure store that sold greeting cards and celebrity posters, among other random things.
Letting the youthful band’s infectious energy, powerful guitar hooks and ever-so-unfiltered teenage lyrics take over the next couple of hours of my life was a definite mood-changer. When I returned to Dubai, I made sure the cassette travelled with me.
Since Dookie, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, Green Day - lead singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tré Cool, who joined the band in 1990 - have released 11 studio albums and continue to pack stadiums and arenas around the world.
So in a time when fame fizzles as quickly and easily as it’s earned, what can Green Day’s longevity really be attributed to?
Over the years, fans have often credited the band’s energetic live performances, the habit of staying true to their roots while remaining open to an evolving sound, as well as some fearless and powerful lyrical messaging, to be the driving force behind their enduring popularity.
Dubai is the Grammy-winning band’s latest stop on a whirlwind world tour, which most recently saw them perform in South Africa for the first time.
It seems like the perfect time to revisit one of my favourite Green Day songs, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), an ubiquitous hit from the band’s fifth studio album Nimrod, which may draw the biggest singalong at tonight’s concert.
Don’t miss Green Day’s performance at Expo City Dubai tonight, with special guests The Offspring. Tickets are available at greendaydxb.com
