He designed Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra's bridal wear, but there's more to the man
Dubai: As Shah Rukh Khan prepares to walk the Met Gala 2025 red carpet tonight in a custom Sabyasachi creation, it’s the perfect moment to revisit our exclusive sit-down with the celebrated Indian designer during his last visit to Dubai.
In a wide-ranging conversation, Sabyasachi Mukherjee — India’s most sought-after couturier — spoke to Gulf News about his fashion ethos, creative instincts, and what truly defines timeless style.
Known for dressing Bollywood royalty like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Alia Bhatt on their wedding days, Sabyasachi doesn’t just design outfits — he crafts cultural moments. But don’t box him in. “I’m probably a minimalist who projects as a maximalist,” he said with a smile.
“Fashion is marketing, not creativity,” he told us. “And I don’t believe in chasing trends. I want to make clothes that will still work 40 years from now.”
From why he’d never dress up an animal ("they're already perfect") to why white is the new black, and how a Dubai shopper in a fuchsia jalabiya sparked an idea for a future collection — this earlier interview offers deep insight into the mind of the man now gearing up to dress India’s King of Cinema for the biggest fashion night on the planet.
Some of his other most fascinating style revelations:
His go-to everyday look? “A white shirt and denim — casual, non-pretentious, and endlessly versatile.”
His favourite design colour at the time of this interview? “White. It’s deceptively dressy and so versatile. For me, it’s the new black.”
If he could design for just one season forever? “Spring-Summer. I’m from a tropical country. I’m done with sepia-tones — I want light and freshness.”
His dream wedding client? “Spider-Man. In white linen with a paisley scarf. Enough of those tight costumes.”
He also spoke about money, fame, and legacy with equal candour:
“I’ve made a lot of money — but if I lost it all tomorrow, I wouldn’t think twice. I’m not attached to it. That’s freedom.”
With Shah Rukh Khan and Sabyasachi Mukherjee coming together at the Met Gala 2025, it’s clear Indian fashion has fully arrived — bold, self-assured, and deeply rooted in personal identity.
