As the fifth movie in the hit franchise arrives, here’s a look back at the story so far, starting from the seminal 1993 film
The Jurassic Park series is one of the highest-grossing film franchises, with an estimated worldwide earning of over $3.6 billion, across four films. As the fifth instalment, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, hits cinemas around the world this weekend, we look back at all the films previously released in the series. Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen any of the films.
In this first offering, we are transported to the mystical island of Isla Nublar, where John Hammond (played by Richard Attenborough) and his company, InGen, has created ‘Jurassic Park’, a theme park populated by dinosaurs.
Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum), Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) are invited to certify the park’s safety, and embark on a tour of the park. However, a programmer, Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) steals fertilised embryos, and causes a power outage.
The group run from the escaped raptors who are killed in a climactic battle against a T-Rex, and leave the island.
The sequel takes place four years later, when dinosaur encounters have been reported in Isla Sorna. Dr. Malcolm is asked by John Hammond to stop InGen, now headed by his nephew, from capturing the dinosaurs.
He arrives at the island and joins Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore). They find out the captured dinosaurs, including an infant T-Rex, are for a theme park in San Diego, and decide to free them.
Amid the chaos, they evade the parent T-Rexes, who kill most of the InGen team, and the film ends with the island being declared a nature preserve.
The trilogy finale unfolds when Dr. Grant is asked to give a wealthy couple an aerial tour of Isla Sorna, in exchange of obtaining funding for his research. He soon realises that the couple just want to find their son who disappeared in the island.
While on the run from raptors, Dr. Grant is separated and eventually saved by the son, and they reunite with the group, following the sound of a satellite phone.
They manage to escape the raptors, after surrendering eggs they had previously stolen, and leave the island.
The fourth instalment takes place 22 years after Jurassic Park. ‘Jurassic World’ is situated on Isla Nublar, where the operations manager, Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard), is visited by her nephews, Zach (Nick Robinson) and Gray (Ty Simpkins).
When raptor handler, Owen (Chris Pratt) is asked to verify the enclosure of the Indominus Rex, he warns them about raising the dinosaur in isolation.
Mayhem ensues when it escapes, and this sets up a pulsating battle between the Indominus and a T-Rex. It is vanquished by the Mosasaurus when it breaches the lagoon, resulting in the group escaping the island.
The sequel, set three years after its predecessor, returns to Isla Nublar, where a volcanic eruption threatens the lives of the dinosaurs that now roam freely. Can Owen and Claire prevent another extinction?
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom releases in the UAE on June 7.
