The Los Angeles Philaharmonic will perform the John WIlliams score live to picture
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first instalment in the eight-part screen saga adapted from the novels by J.K. Rowling, will screen at the Hollywood Bowl this summer with the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing the John Williams score live to picture.
The event, scheduled for July 6, will be conducted by Justin Freer, with the full movie shown on the Bowl’s high-definition screens.
Freer is the organiser behind the recently announced The Harry Potter Film Concert Series, a film-concert tour that will travel the country.
The LA Phil said via a spokeswoman that its presentation of Harry Potter is similar to past movie concerts at the Bowl “in that we’ve licensed it from whichever agency/company represents each respective title in this film-with-orchestra format. All of these were done as one-offs, which is the case for [Harry Potter] as well.”
As previously announced, the upcoming Bowl season will also feature screenings of the 2009 reboot of Star Trek, with a live accompaniment by the LA Phil.
The first Harry Potter movie was directed by Chris Columbus and was released in the US in 2001. Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the boy wizard, was just 12 years old when the blockbuster opened.
Williams’ original score for the movie received an Academy Award nomination. The famed composer will appear at the Bowl this summer to conduct selections from his music from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Last year’s Bowl season featured live concert screenings of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The LA Phil announced earlier this year that it will introduce a new series at Walt Disney Concert Hall featuring screenings of classic movies with live orchestral accompaniment. For the upcoming 2016-17 season, they will include Rebel Without a Cause, On the Waterfront and Casablanca.
