Her quirky style, signature red lips and shock of blonde hair have combined to make her an icon in a pop world crammed with strong personalities, and it's safe to say that Gwen Stefani helped pave the way for the super-sexy likes of Katy Perry and Rihanna to explode onto the music scene.

Having fronted rock band No Doubt as the only girl in the group, introduced Japan's Harajuku style to the masses with her Love. Angel. Music. Baby album, and collaborated with some of the biggest names in the business, including Pharrell Williams and Akon, you'd expect 42-year-old Gwen, who counts Angelina Jolie among her close friends, to have achieved J-Lo or Madonna-style supreme self-confidence as a woman able to call the shots and dictate her terms in a male-dominated industry. But behind Gwen's ‘woman power' façade appears to lurk insecurity of epic proportions, which once more reared its head when Gwen admitted that her "make-up goes on every day, even if I'm not going anywhere."

So, is the modern, having-it-all, celebrity mother pose all an act?
