Besides maybe the dancing baby Groot, Rocket Raccoon may have been the best nonhuman character in Marvel’s 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy film. So it stands to reason that in the cartoon adaptation — coming to Disney XD on September 26 — the creature continues to be a huge part of the action.

In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Origins — Rocket Part 2 — part of the show’s pre-debut rollout that spotlights each of the five main characters (Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora and Drax) — we get to see Rocket’s escape from incarceration and his friendship with his alien tree-like buddy Groot.

The two break out of some kind of prison, as they did alongside Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord and Zoe Saldana’s Gamora and the rest, but there’s no mention of the team — yet. On display in the clip is Rocket’s agility, his uncanny ability to use technology and his constant verbal jabs.

The story and the show itself are an original telling of the Guardians story line, not a prequel or sequel to the movie.

In the video above, it’s a similar kind of take on Rocket and Groot as the movie version that was voiced by Bradley Cooper, and in the comics as well. This Rocket, though, is voiced by Trevor Devall. The voice actor has previously played Rocket on Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Emperor Palpatine in a number of animated Star Wars offshoots and Fancy Pants on the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic show.
