Comic-Con bans selfie sticks

It looks like the length of your arm will be the limiting factor on the angles of your Comic-Con selfies this year.

Comic-Con International, the organisers behind San Diego Comic-Con, have posted their new technology rules and the very first rule on the list bans selfie sticks and “similar devices.”

The ban includes “selfie sticks, GoPro poles, or any device that extends your camera or phone away from your hand.”

People who need more distance to capture everything they want within the frame will have to resort to relying on the kindness of strangers. Don’t worry, it’s just as easy as asking to take a photo with or of somebody.

Concerns for all of the Comic-Con attendees’ safety was the reason cited for the blanket ban.

“With so many people in attendance, protruding cameras or phones sticking up in the air are a definite hazard,” explained the organisers in a blog post.

Any attendee caught with a selfie stick will be asked by security to put it away. The ban is in effect over the entire Convention Centre (including the grounds outside) and at all official Comic-Con events outside of the centre.

Other items banned at Comic-Con include Google Glass (during programmes), e-cigarettes, vaping products and drones.

San Diego Comic-Con will be held on July 9-12 at the San Diego Convention Center.
