Exploring Suga's hidden acting talent through his music videos
BTS’s Suga is famous for being roped into doing things that he never expected to do. The rapper joined BTS under the assumption that he would stick to production, but unfortunately, the universe and Big Hit had other plans for him. He had to dance, too. And is an impeccable dancer too, you don’t need That That’s proof—from the early days itself, Suga had a different verve in his dancing skills. It was different from Jimin’s elegance and grace, and not quite Jungkook and J-Hope’s energy.
But that’s not all. When it comes to acting, V is often and rightly associated with the acting, owing to his success in Hwarang, or the painful music video Love Wins All. We hear about Jin’s acting ambitions often, and we’re waiting for it to take flight. The HYYH era gave all the members a chance to showcase their acting chops, but somehow, Suga’s performance skills often fly under the radar.
So before his official discharge, let’s take a look back at some of Suga’s most powerful music video moments, where a single glance, or an eyebrow flick, said more than words ever could.
While this was intense and nuanced storytelling at its best, where Suga viewed himself in a dual role, as someone corrupted by fame and as the commoner, the song unravelled Suga’s unusual acting capabilities. As ‘the king and boss’, he watches in a sinister manner from his throne. There’s almost a malevolence in the way he dances as the ruler---manic and intoxicated with power. The power is in the way he flexes the sword and glares at those who try to usurp his power. No wonder fans say that Daechwita should have been an entire movie.
It’s been nearly a decade since the HYYH era, but as much as BTS may want to move on, ARMY refuses to let it rest. Theories still swirl, and the demand for closure remains as strong as ever. One of the most haunting threads in the series is Suga’s storyline—especially in I Need You. The video opens with him waking up alone in a dim motel room, and by the end, the entire place is in flames. Across those few minutes, Suga moves through layers of rage, grief, and raw vulnerability, flashing back to better days now out of reach. And knowing what we know now about Suga, it's hard to believe it was just acting.
True ARMY’s know that one scene.
In a powerful moment set to J-Hope’s emotional verse, a bruised and broken Suga gets into a heartbreaking fight with Jungkook. The confrontation is raw, tear-filled, and ends with Suga shoving Jungkook aside before shattering a glass mantlepiece. It's brief—one of many bittersweet flashbacks to the boys’ earlier, carefree days—but it lingers. It’s the kind of scene that etches itself into your memory, and one ARMYs still revisit, trying to unpack the pain behind every glance and gesture.
Once again Suga fights himself and this time, his alter-ego is a suited, and booted mafia member. Another tale dripping with meaning and layers, Haegum is another example of Suga’s untapped potential.
So back to the question. Actor Suga, when?
