A biopic of the game’s Russian inventor Alexey Pajitnov is in development in the vein of ‘The Social Network’
A drama about the inventor of Tetris is in development from director/producer Brett Ratner. According to The Tracking Board, the untitled biopic will focus on Alexey Pajitnov, the Russian designer of the globally successful game. Pajitnov initially made the game, with help from Dmitry Pavlovsky and Vadim Gerasimov, while working for a Soviet-funded company. Because of this, he didn’t receive royalties until 1996, despite the game being sold with every Game Boy console around the world. He also made Welltris, a lesser known sequel that used a similar format to Tetris, but added a third dimension. He was also employed by Microsoft to develop games between 1996 and 2005.
Ratner is set to produce the film along with James Packer. The two founded the company RatPac, which has been behind Horrible Bosses 2, the Entourage movie and the hotly anticipated Leonardo DiCaprio thriller The Revenant. It’s being seen as a film in the vein of The Social Network.
A Tetris movie was announced last year and was pushed as a more direct take on the game, defined as “a very big, epic sci-fi movie”, yet there’s been no word since on its development.
