Bollywood actor is now "out of danger" but remains in the ICU under observation
Mumbai : Thursday morning brought shocking news as reports emerged of an attack on Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence during a suspected burglary attempt. The actor sustained multiple stab wounds in the incident.
The 'Hum Tum' actor was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently recovering in the ICU. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police have formed 20 teams to track down and apprehend the assailant.
At around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, an intruder broke into Saif Ali Khan's 11th-floor apartment in Bandra. The intruder confronted the actor’s maid, leading to a violent altercation when Saif intervened. The actor sustained severe stab wounds during the scuffle.
Hospitalisation and surgery
Saif was immediately taken to Lilavati Hospital, where a team of doctors performed surgery to treat his injuries. The actor suffered a significant injury to his thoracic spinal cord, and surgeons removed a 2.5-inch-long knife lodged in his spine. Doctors also repaired a spinal fluid leak. While Saif is now "out of danger," he remains in the ICU under close observation.
Mumbai Police have classified the incident as an attempted robbery. According to DCP Zone 9, Dixit Gedam, the assailant used the fire escape staircase to enter Saif’s residence.
"The incident appears to be a robbery attempt. We are working to arrest the accused. Ten detection teams are actively investigating the case. An offence has been registered at Bandra Police Station," Gedam stated.
Saif’s PR team confirmed the attack in a statement, requesting privacy from fans and media.
"There was an attempted burglary at Mr. Saif Ali Khan’s residence during which he was attacked and sustained injuries. He is currently undergoing surgery at the hospital. We request the media and fans to be patient as this is a police matter. Updates will be shared as appropriate."
Following the incident, Saif’s family and close friends gathered at Lilavati Hospital to check on him. His wife Kareena Kapoor Khan, sister Soha Ali Khan, brother-in-law Kunal Kemmu, and children Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim were among those present. On Thursday evening, Saif’s mother and veteran actor Sharmila Tagore also visited the hospital.
Mumbai Police have recorded statements from staff members, including the maid who was the first to confront the intruder. According to her, the assailant demanded ₹1 crore and attacked her with a hexa blade, injuring her hands.
In her statement, she described the incident:
"He ran towards me with a wooden object in one hand and a hexa blade in the other. During the scuffle, he attacked me with the blade, injuring my wrists and fingers. When I asked him what he wanted, he said, ‘One crore.’"
The maid also mentioned seeing a shadow near the bathroom door before the intruder emerged. She described how the family and staff tried to restrain the attacker before he attacked Saif.
Hours after the incident, Kareena Kapoor issued a statement on Instagram, calling the day "incredibly challenging" and requesting privacy.
"We are still trying to process the events that have unfolded. I respectfully request the media and paparazzi to refrain from relentless speculation and coverage during this difficult time. Your understanding and cooperation are deeply appreciated as we navigate this sensitive period as a family."
In a significant move, Mumbai Police have formed 20 special teams to track down the attacker. Efforts are underway to apprehend the individual responsible for this shocking incident.
