Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone will perform an elaborate lavani dance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming period drama Bajirao Mastani.

Lavani is a combination of music and dance popular in the Indian state of Maharashtra.

Keen to recreate the magic of Dhola Re from Devdas, the director has enlisted the help of choreographer Remo D’Souza.

The song will be shot over a period of 12 days, with more than 50 background dancers on a larger-than-life set. The actresses have been rehearsing for more than 10 days, given the challenging choreography.

“Though it is essentially a lavani number, it would not be wrong to call it a mix of folk and classical dance as well. It is never easy to work with [Bhansali] as he wants nothing short of perfection. Also, with the costumes, it is never easy to choreograph or perform for the actresses. This one has two actresses so it will require absolute perfection and synchronisation,” D’Souza said.

“After 12 years, since Devdas, audiences will see two contemporary actresses dance together in the same frame. It is a lavani composed folk song and a lot of work has gone into the sets and the picturisation of the song. Both Priyanka and Deepika have worked extremely hard on the song and rehearsed long hours for it,” Bhansali said.
