'Jaat' stars Deol in the lead with Randeep Hooda playing the antagonist
Dubai: Sunny Deol’s latest action film Jaat has landed in controversy just days after its theatrical release, with an FIR filed against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, and Vineet Kumar Singh for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
According to a report on NDTV, the complaint, lodged in Jalandhar on Thursday, invokes Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which addresses deliberate acts intended to outrage religious feelings. The FIR also names director Gopichand Malineni and the producers of the film.
According to the complainant, a particular scene in the film—released on April 10—“deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the entire Christian community” and allegedly showed disrespect. The timing of the film’s release during the Christian holy period of Good Friday and Easter was also questioned, with allegations that the filmmakers intended to incite unrest.
Jaat, which marks Malineni’s Hindi directorial debut after a string of Telugu hits like Don Seenu and Veera Simha Reddy, stars Deol in the lead with Randeep Hooda playing the antagonist. The ensemble cast also includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Saiyami Kher, Regina Cassandra, Prashant Bajaj, Zarina Wahab, and Jagapathi Babu.
The film was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu. Despite the controversy, Jaat had a strong opening, raking in over Rs600 million at the box office.
On Thursday, Sunny Deol confirmed that a sequel, Jaat 2, is already in the works.
