Anurag Kashyap on gender equality in Bollywood

Indian director Anurag Kashyap, who is known for his dark, provocative dramas such as the gritty gangster epic Gangs Of Wasseypur, claims that gender inequality is being bridged in his male-driven Bollywood industry. But the strides are slow.

“Bollywood is going through a transition phase and the gender representation is changing slowly. It’s also a right time to speak about it because of the Harvey Weinstein episode, there’s a shift in the dynamic … Something like that was waiting to happen,” said Kashyap in an interview with Gulf News tabloid!.

The director is expected to spearhead a panel discussion on Friday in Dubai about gender stereotypes and pop culture at the ongoing WIL Economic Forum, an event that promotes women’s economic empowerment.

“A few mainstream films have taken the onus on themselves and are looking at women as individual characters. Look at films like Kahaani, Pink and Tumhari Sulu, they have strong women in them” said Kashyap.
