Malayali superstar's film struggled to cross Rs50 crore mark despite Vishu release
Dubai: Despite the star power of a suite-up Mammootty and the Vishu holiday release, Bazooka has had a lukewarm run at the box office so far.
Directed by debutant Deeno Dennis, the action thriller reportedly earned Rs 20 million on its second day (Friday), bringing its total domestic collection to Rs50 million.
The film opened with Rs 30.2 million on Thursday but couldn’t maintain momentum, likely impacted by mixed reviews and stiff competition from younger stars’ releases like Maranamass and Alappuzha Gymkhana.
On Day 2, the film saw a dip in occupancy, dropping to 39.77% from the previous day’s 48.53%.
While the film’s sleek style and Mammootty’s commanding presence have drawn some praise, the simplistic storyline and underwhelming promotions may have hurt its box office potential. That said, the festive release window and Mammootty’s enduring fan base could help Bazooka hold ground in the coming days.
Interestingly, Bazooka has already fared better than the actor’s previous outing Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse, which earned only Rs60million over its four-day opening weekend and closed with Rs 90.1 million in total domestic earnings. However, it still trails behind Bramayugam’s two-day haul—an experimental thriller that benefitted from glowing reviews and strong word of mouth.
Comparisons with Mammootty’s own action film Turbo are inevitable. That film stormed into cinemas with Rs 60 million on Day 1. So far, the numbers related to Bazooka collection seems unlikely to match, especially with Ajith Kumar’s Good Bad Ugly also vying for audience attention.
Up next, Mammootty will be seen in Kalamkaval directed by Jithin K Jose, followed by the highly anticipated MMMN project with Mahesh Narayanan. The latter marks a grand reunion with Mohanlal after more than a decade and is expected to generate massive buzz.
