Azerbaijan: Sharjah was chosen as the 2014 Capital of Islamic Culture by the Ministers of Culture in Islamic countries.
The choice was made in evaluation of Sharjah’s contributions in the cultural field on the domestic, Arab and Islamic levels.
The announcement was made at the sixth conference of the Organization of Islamic Countries in the Azerbaijan capital of Baku.
Abdul Rahman Mohammad Al Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development and head of the UAE delegation, spelled out the UAE vision and stances towards Islamic causes and cultural issues.
Al Owais said ''the new title provides a boost to Sharjah’s cultural development march and comes as a tribute to Sharjah's offer of its Islamic cultural panorama in the form of a host of cultural and Islamic events."
''The new cultural achievement crowned Sharjah for its leading cultural role at local, regional, Arab and international arenas,'' Al Owais added.
