Campaign to cut food prices off to a flying start momentum
Dubai: The UAE Ministry of Economy (MoE) has recently launched a month-long campaign to cut food prices by up to 30 per cent in line with the global trend of decreasing prices of commodities. The MoE is conducting the campaign as part of the Gulf Consumer Protection Day initiative.
Discounts on about 1,000 items across the country, including meat, rice and other basic food products, are part of the programme initiated by the Consumer Protection Department of the MoE.
Some of the country's leading hypermarket chains, including LuLu Hypermarkets and most co-operative societies are supporting the programme.
V. Nandkumar, Corporate Communication Head of Emke Group that runs Lulu Hypermarkets commented that "starting on March 1, Lulu already cut prices by 10 to 30 per cent on most of the essential commodities and even on non-food products."
Rebecca, a Dubai resident, said she was surprised to see a drop in prices of basic commodities.
Decisions about reducing prices of common commodities are very appreciable particularly during these tight financial times for all middle class families.
