Ras Al Khaimah: RAK Airways will re-launch services before the end of 2010, following a hiatus of more than a year, a senior executive said on Wednesday.

Shaikh Omar Bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Chairman of RAK Airways, explained that the exceptionally tough market conditions, created by the global economic downturn during 2008 and 2009 forced the young airline to suspend scheduled services in May 2009.

These conditions have now abated, he said.

“We are now ready to make a strategic re-entry into the market,” Shaikh Omar said.

“We have a lot of exciting new plans, which will be unveiled soon. Omar Jahameh, our recently appointed CEO and his team are finalising the details of our flights to destinations in the Gulf, Africa and the Indian Sub Continent,” he added.

“The decision to re-launch the airline is part of the ambitious vision of Shaikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, aimed at boosting tourism in the emirate. RAK Airways is viewed as a key part of that plan,” Shaikh Omar said.

RAK Airways was established under Emiri Decree No 3/2006 issued by His Highness Shaikh Saqr Bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, in January 2006.

The airline is a private joint stock company incorporated in the RAK Investment Authority Free Zone with an authorized capital of Dh1.5 billion.
