Dubai: Naseer Soomro, who held the title of the tallest employee in the aviation industry, passed away on Monday at the age of 55 after a prolonged battle with illness.

He died in his hometown of Shikarpur, Sindh province of Pakistan, following a struggle with a lung disease.

Soomro’s brother, Riaz Soomro, confirmed that he had been suffering from severe respiratory issues for several months and had been receiving treatment at home. Despite showing initial signs of improvement, his condition worsened in recent months. His funeral prayers were held on Tuesday in Shikarpur, with a large gathering of mourners paying their respects.

Remarkable stature

At an astonishing height of 7 feet 9 inches, Soomro made history not only as one of the world’s tallest men but also as the tallest employee in the aviation industry. He was also the tallest man in Pakistan. His remarkable stature earned him international fame and he was even offered a job by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). In recognition of his unique height, PIA employed him as part of its airport customer services team, making him a symbol of pride for the aviation sector and for Pakistan.

“The tallest man in #Pakistan & a valued #PIA’s airport customer services team member, Mr. Naseer Soomro has left this world for his eternal abode,” PIA announced on its X account.

Soomro’s health challenges began with chronic respiratory problems, which led to multiple hospitalisations over the years. He was admitted to a private hospital in Karachi last year, where his condition temporarily improved, but his health declined again in recent months despite ongoing treatment.

Tributes

The news of his passing has prompted tributes from across the country. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed deep sorrow and offered his condolences to Soomro’s family, while Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Governor Kamran Tessori, and several political leaders also paid their respects.

Soomro’s legacy as the tallest person to ever work in the aviation industry will be remembered, as he brought global attention to Pakistan and became a source of inspiration for many.
