Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a federal decree amending the name of the Emirates Identity Authority to become the Federal Authority for Identity and Naturalisation (FAIN).

The Federal Authority for Identity and  Naturalisation will be tasked with the identity, naturalization and passports affairs as well as the entry and residency of foreigners.

The authority will also be responsible for residency and naturalisation policies and their implementation, in keeping with this decree and other laws and regulations in effect in the UAE.


Present laws remain enforced

Under the decree, the present naturalisation and residency laws will remain enforced until the new laws of the new authority are issued and enforced.

Under the Decree no. 3 of 2017, the new authority will be chaired by a seven-member board of directors.

The chairman of the board will have the rank of a minister and members of the board, who will include representatives of the bodies related to the authority, will be appointed by another federal decree.

The term of the membership will be three years renewable, and the authority will have a director general or more at the rank of undersecretary.

The director will be a civilian or from the military, with a rank of not less than a major general.
