When your waistline is your mortal enemy and your weight is pushing you towards becoming a statistic —  it is time to cut the fat.

Today, Gulf News launches its anti-obesity campaign. As part of the drive, follow staff reporter and videographer Mohammad Al Khan on his journey battling obesity.

He plans to lose 50 kilograms in six months.

This anti-obesity campaign is part of our corporate social responsibility initiative — an effort to give something back to the community.

Obese individuals have over a 50 per cent increased risk of death from cardiovascular diseases — life expectancy is shortened by half a decade. The UAE is within the top 20 list of nations, globally, with obese people.

Over the coming months we will cover issues related to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

The main focus of the drive will be to follow Al Khan, a severely obese Emirati, in his attempt to lose 50kg in six months.

He currently weighs 152kg. Over the years he has tried just about every fad diet out there, only to see his waistline yo-yo between 150kg and 175kg.

Starting today Al Khan has begun a strict diet and exercise plan put together by his coach, professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, Tam Khan. He will also have two doctors, a cardiologist and endocrinologist, keeping a close eye on his progress.

You can follow his blog, twitter updates (@GNCutTheFat) and video logs on GNTV.

Today we cut the fat out of our diet, today we cut the fat out of our habits, today we cut the fat out of our lives.
