Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has organised a workshop in cooperation with global energy market leader Enel, to focus on the digitalisation and management of smart networks, and the advanced infrastructure of smart cities.

The workshop, held at the Raffles Hotel Dubai, bringing together senior officials, experts and scientists from both organisations, was organised as the result of a memorandum of understanding signed between both organisations last January, to establish framework for cooperation, to exchange knowledge and enhance smart network management, Dewa said in an press release.

The workshop focused on Enel’s strategy for smart network development, and production, transmission and distribution systems, in addition to the integration of renewable energy sources and advanced metering infrastructure.

“We are committed to achieving the Smart Dubai initiative, launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the smartest city in the world by facilitating partnerships with international organisations, to benefit from their experiences, in adherence with Dewa’s strategy for 2021, and the Dubai Plan 2021, to transform Dubai into a smart, integrated, and connected city,” said Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dewa.

Dewa’s smart network was established with a total investment of Dh7 billion, and covers demand management, asset management, automation at switching stations, distribution network automation, information and communication technology infrastructure, big data analysis, smart grid security, system integration and smart metering.

Dewa launched the Shams Dubai initiative, to encourage building owners to produce their own electricity through photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, to link it to Dewa’s network. Dewa launched its Green Charger initiative to establish the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations, Al Tayer added.

Al Tayer noted the importance of Dewa’s cooperation with Enel, to broaden knowledge sharing horizons, and benefit from world-class experiences which will enhance Dewa’s services and initiatives, to keep pace with rapid developments in Dubai and the wider UAE.

Dewa adopts smart grid technology to aid in systematic decision making, and operational integration, to enhance reliability, sustainability, energy efficiency, infrastructural management, and network operation.
