Dubai: Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, and President of Dewa, officially opened the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (Wetex) on Monday morning, touring the various stands and talking to exhibitors.

This week Dubai plays host to three major ecologically-focused events that will emphasise sustainability.

First is the 19th annual Wetex, running from October 23 to 25 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), held under the directives of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The event covers an area of over 70,000 square metres, featuring 2,000 exhibitors from 50 different countries.

Held under the theme ‘At the forefront of sustainability,’ the organisers of Wetex say that it is a global event, for “Dubai to share the concepts of sustainability across the sectors of energy, water, environment, green economy, development and smart cities with the world, in line with DEWA’s endeavours to maintain its status as a leading sustainable world class utility.”

Wetex is swiftly followed by the 4th annual World Green Economy Summit (WGES).

The green economy summit will run from October 24 to 25, at the same venue. At this year’s WGES, at least 60 speakers from around the world will focus on key topics like smart cities, the green economy, innovation, and sustainable development.

The two events are being held in conjunction with the 2nd edition of the Dubai Solar Show, as part of Dubai’s Green Week.

In a statement, Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of Dewa, founder and chairman of Wetex, said: “Wetex plays a vital role in supporting the efforts of the leadership of Dubai and the UAE on the global green economy and sustainable development map. This event is a comprehensive, integrated and specialised global exhibition in the areas of energy production and rationalisation, renewable energy, desalination, sustainability, technology and green development. Since its launch, the exhibition has established itself as the largest of its kind in the world.”

“The show … serves as a forum for decision makers, investors, buyers, and enthusiasts from all around the world to gain insight into the leading projects in renewable and clean energy in the region and the world,” he added.
