Dubai: It may cost more to fill your tank starting Wednesday, but some residents have shrugged off the scheduled Dh0.15 hike per litre of petrol as “insignificant”.
“Petrol is not a very expensive commodity here,” said Nasser Usmani, a Pakistani civil engineer in Dubai.

“Compared to the other costs people are facing, such as school transportation costs, this is not very significant,” he said.

John Kiely, a Dubai resident, told Gulf News at a petrol station on Al Wasl Road that the hike was trivial. “Compared to the price of [petrol] anywhere else, this price rise is insignificant,” he said.
The expatriate from Ireland, who spends Dh100 a week on petrol, said it costs six times more to purchase fuel in his country. “This rise is not going to affect my monthly budget,” he said.
“It is a small rise,” said another Dubai resident, Jennifer Mascarenhas. “It will definitely not have a big impact on me.”

However, she feared a rise in fuel prices could mean a hike in food costs. She said she would be “extremely upset” if transport charges for food products were passed on to consumers. “That would really affect me and the citizens of the community,” she said.
