A cup of coffee and the newspaper in his hands — this is what a regular morning looks like for Dr Nikolay Matev, a Bulgarian national based in Abu Dhabi.
As he picks up the newspaper, his first preference is the main section, where he can get news from the UAE, region and around the world.
He said: “I live in the UAE, so I always start with the local section because I want to know what is going on in the country. Then I turn to the pages with news about Europe and the US, they always interest me. And finally I move to the Business section.”
After he is done, his wife also grabs the newspaper to get her daily news. His children, who aren’t in the country, like to log on to www.gulfnews.com to find out what is happening in the UAE.
As former residents, they also like to stay updated on the news and have discussions about it with their father.
Matev said: “They usually send me links from the website, which they find interesting and ask me to note it. Having lived here, they know of the spirit of the UAE.”
Coverage
He remembers subscribing to Gulf News because, “it was one of the first English language newspapers in the country”.
And he has stuck with it ever since because of the “good coverage”.
He said: “I think the reason I have continued to subscribe for this long is because I consider it to be one of the best newspapers.
"Everything is well covered and I like to read through all the sections, be it general news, The Views section or specifically global news. Even the business news is worth a read.”
Though he doesn’t remember the exact year he signed up, our records show he has been a subscriber since 1988.
