Unsafe pedestrian crossing needs attention

A pedestrian crossing that I use every day needs the authorities’ urgent attention as there is no place for pedestrians to stand and wait when the signal is red. This crossing, on Baniyas Road in Deira, has a tiny pavement, which is not evenly levelled and is slightly slippery at times due to the plants and bushes next to it.

A few days ago, as I was waiting to cross the road, I saw a group of children standing very close to the crossing, waiting for the signal to turn green. The signal takes a long time and the position of those standing does not seem safe. I was standing on the opposite side and was very concerned for the safety of these children.

Ruthie Mary Santos, a leasing executive based in Sharjah, also uses the same pedestrian crossing and faces the same situation while commuting to work daily.

She said: “There is no place to wait there when there are too many people standing.”

I also raised this issue with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and not only were they very prompt in responding, but they also assured me that this issue will be dealt with in a particular time frame. Their professional approach has won me over. I just hope that the officials will take care of this issue soon.
