The 3-inch Cheeto was discovered and preserved between 2018 and 2022
Netizens on social media were in for a shocking surprise when the price for Cheetozard was announced.
Cheetozard, the Hot Cheeto shaped like Charizard from the popular Japanese anime franchise, Pokemon, was sold for $87,840 (Dh 322,605.58) in an auction.
Also called Lizardo in Japan, the Pokemon shaped Cheeto was first discovered and preserved between 2018 and 2022 by 1st and Goal Collectibles, according to the auction website.
Charizard is an orange dragon with turquoise wings and a flame at the tip of its tail. The Cheetozard, however, is “affixed to a customised Pokemon card and encapsulated in a clear card storage box,” according to the website.
“Presented is a 3-inch long Flamin’ Hot Cheeto in the shape of the Pokemon Charizard… The Cheeto surged in popularity on social media platforms in late 2024.”
The auction, which has a total of 60 bids, initially began at $250 in mid-February, with the winning bid as high as $72,000 (Dh 264,430.80) plus a buyer’s premium.
Netizens on social media expressed their shock at this, with one comment reading, “The most expensive hot Cheetos in the world. This is kind of stupid but its 2025, people doing wild things.”
Another user said, “You can’t buy this having just wealth alone! You also need stupidity.”
While most netizens expressed shock, some chose to find humour in this. One user said, “I’d want this to be my final meal.”
While another user said, “I got an onion shaped like bulbasaurs’ (Pokemon) back. Taking offers.”
Cheetozard, however, is not the first crunchy snack to be sold at such a high price. According to multinational news organisation Cable News Network (CNN), in 2017, a Cheeto resembling Harambe the gorilla was auctioned on eBay for nearly $100,000 (Dh 367,265).
